A Sketchbook Year

This is a lovely new course that has been created for you to explore the discipline of ‘sketch-booking’. In order to understand the potentials and advantages we will reference artists who have used sketchbooks throughout history. One of the most important tools in an artists tool kit, this is a discipline that will improve your art practice developing your creativity through encouraged deep investigations into artists and their techniques. This is also a personal journey of discovery, giving you the benefits of a mindful practice that will help relieve the stresses of the 21st century.

Meets once a month on a Wednesday and three weeks on Thursday 10am - 1pm.

I have been attending the Foundation class at the Art School Cheddar for five years. During this time I have experienced painting with acrylic and watercolour, collage, printing and working in 3D. Katrina is inspirational and challenges each member of the group to achieve their potential. ‘Art Tuesday’ is my favourite day of the week;I love it!

We are starting this beautiful course with Leonardo Da Vinci, exploring ideas around his world

as a polymath. Using traditional and contemporary techniques and tools, inks, calligraphy pens

and more. Creating ground for your pages, designing concepts and working drawings.

Drawing Techniques, Tonal Values, Shapes, Anatomy; Hands, Features. Grouping of objects,

Nature, Botanical and more…….

Over the year we will look at one artist at a time working in response over an eight week period. Starting with Leonardo Da Vinci one of the most amazing artists of all time. We will attempt to understand some of his techniques and thought processes. The second two months we will move onto contemporary artist, Grayson Perry, we will be able to connect his influence from the past and how he reimagines his art to make it relevant for today's society. Following with Frida Kahlo, an all time favourite artist of mine, I feel it is my duty as a woman, to remind students about women artists throughout the ages who had been written out of 'history of art'. After Kahlo I wanted to link her beautifully illustrated 'flora and fauna' paintings to Victorian botanist Ernst Haeckel. Leading to yet another female artist, Beatrix Potter, also working with nature in a very different way, her art conveys her stories. Finally a very different artist, American Edward Hopper who also documented and worked in sketchbooks which helped him realise his cinematographic style paintings.
